Toto April 2019
The little dog that was Dorothy’s pet in The Wizard of Oz went on quite an adventure didn’t he? Did you ever wonder what a dog thinks about all the predicaments that we humans get ourselves into? I thought I would take a stab at that little dog’s thoughts.
I don’t see much that I like about this Professor Marvel in the way he dresses and his painted mobile house carriage that says he knows the crowned heads of Europe. Smart fellow, even if he is a complete fake. I didn’t want to run away from home even if he did give me a hotdog. Well, we are on our way back now but there is a big storm coming. Dorothy, we’ve got to get into the storm cellar. Too late! I knew we shouldn’t have left home. Now we’re in trouble.
“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” said Dorothy.
Witches, Munchkins, funny shoes, boy this is a crazy place. Pretty ruby slippers but I wonder if the evil one that just died will have any influence on Dorothy now that she has the Wicked Witch of the East’s shoes on. Yellow brick road, huh? “Some people without a brain do a lot of talking,” said Scarecrow. Pretty bright for a fellow made of straw and hand-me-down clothes. It amazes me how the very people you think haven’t any wisdom suddenly just say something profound. “I’d be tender, I’d be gentle, if I only had a heart,” sang Tinman. “I’d be brave as a blizzard if I only had the nerve,” sang the Lion. These fellows spend so much time focused on the things they don’t have! I can hear that witch behind the tree. Evil, pure evil. “What makes a king out of a slave? Courage!” said Lion.
Wizard of Oz my paw! It’s just a little guy behind a control booth curtain. Oh, he’s larger than the Munchkins but still, not that much bigger. Humans! They are all so special-effects-awe-struck.
Dorothy said, “If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard, because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.” Tap your heals together three times and think to yourself – there is no place like home. “I’m not going to leave you ever ever again, because I love you all. There’s no place like home.”
Toto thinks, “No kidding. We get fed, we have a place to sleep, there are cats to chase, pigs to smell, and I love Dorothy and she loves me. What more could a little dog want? Grrrrrratitude – that’s what it is all about. Whoever says “It’s a dogs life” misses the whole point of it.”
